Analytical Services
We have well equipped laboratories to analyse a variety of aquatic biota samples ranging from potable water supply, sewage treatment, watercourse and wetland sources throughout Europe. Our clients include Regulators like the Environment Agency and Natural England, MoD, water companies, engineering consultancies, local government, rivers trusts, wildlife trusts, water sports, fishing clubs, Fish Legal, Angling Trust, Salmon and Trout
Association, The Wild Trout Trust and individual riparian owners.
Macroinvertebrate analysis
All aquatic macroinvertebrate analyses are undertaken to a minimum of routine Environment Agency standards where our company has passed all AQC testing by the regulators. We are UK leaders in species level analysis of macroinvertebrate community samples and the associated biometric fingerprinting of environmental stresses in watercourses.

We are UK leaders in species level analysis of macroinvertebrate community samples and the associated biometric fingerprinting of environmental stresses in watercourses.
While our team are fully au-fait with the use of RIVPACS/RICT and the Pollution Diagnostic System when required, we have also developed a bespoke computer package capable of delivering all of the biological signatures for acid, sediment, pesticide, flow, organic and nutrient stress from a watercourse macroinvertebrate sample at the touch of a button. Unlike RIVPACS/RICT the Aquascience Consultancy Limited computer package has a bespoke species and abundance weighted litmus paper for measuring organic stress in the form of species level Saprobic indexing and a nutrient (TRP) index in the shape of the Total Reactive Phosphorous Index which has been developed from the Bayesian Network Modelling data banks of the Pollution Diagnostic System with colleagues at Staffordshire University and the Environment Agency. These cutting edge pollution diagnostic tools are allowing rapid spatial and temporal assessment of both ‘pinch points’ of environmental stress and un-impacted reaches of watercourses throughout the UK as shown in the following map of the Wiltshire River Avon.
Algal analysis
We have expert international and published algologists in our team with over 25 years experience in algal identification, enumeration and risk assessment.

We operate a highly efficient and cost-effective algal analysis service. Either courier or our bespoke postal service enables water managers to submit running watercourse, standing water, water treatment process and potable supply samples to us and receive detailed information in the form of an Algal Status Report within 48 working hours of any sample receipt at our laboratories. Algal samples undergo phytoplankton identification by taxonomic
groups to genus or species level, quantified in cells/ml, with any quantum of rotifer and zooplankton activity noted in numbers/litre. Blue-green algal levels are highlighted along with Environment Agency trigger thresholds for signing water bodies and an assessment of potential public health implications. If required, we can also undertake routine algal biomass assessment on phytoplankton samples by measuring chlorophylla levels.
Potable supply biological analyses
We offer a high level of expertise, based upon 20 years of water industry expertise, in the analysis of tap and mains hydrant bag samples for biological and particulate material content.
